THE ROLE OF ATTENTION AND MOTIVATION IN SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

This paper examines the crucial role of attention and motivation in the process of second language acquisition (SLA). The study explores how cognitive attention processes influence language input intake and how motivational factors such as integrative and instrumental motivation affect learners’ performance. Drawing upon theories by Krashen, Schmidt, Gardner, and Dörnyei, this paper argues that both attention and motivation are key determinants of successful SLA. Findings from recent studies indicate that motivated learners who consciously attend to linguistic input tend to achieve higher levels of proficiency.
