AL-BIRUNI’S WORKS AS SOURCES FOR THE STUDY OF EMPIRICAL KNOWLEDGE IN MEDIEVAL SCIENCE

This article analyzes Al-Biruni’s works as important sources for the study of empirical knowledge in medieval science. Empirical knowledge is interpreted not only as experiment in the modern laboratory sense, but also as observation, measurement, comparison, calculation, verification, and critical treatment of sources. Al-Biruni’s astronomical, geographical, mineralogical, pharmacological, historical, and ethnographic writings make it possible to reconstruct evidence-based forms of medieval scientific reasoning. The study argues that the source value of his works lies not only in the information they preserve, but also in the methods by which information was collected, compared, tested, measured, and organized.
